The head link made me realize that IBM has always been the tech leader. Making money off of it and gaining share though... Who knows how long it will take to make GMR a good alternative. I certainly wouldn't buy one of the 3GB models!(30% more expensive). If you read the IBM paper, they discovered GMR in 1998 - "in perfect crystal samples exposed to 1000x the signals in HDDs" Taking that to production it seems is pretty difficult; Production at decent prices that is. The PR says that the drives come in a range of sizes, but at those prices I bet they don't start removing platters/heads for a while. Makes you wonder how people think you can just jump into producing GMR immediately. I still say we'll see the next gen of MR products(2.8) out in the main stream before you see the GMR stuff out there. Anyone have any idea when we'll start seeing the next gen MR? Hopefully big bad bill's Win98 is a real storage hog! :) todd
