Atlas Renewable Energy recently launched the Shangri-La solar project, which is located in Ibagué, Tolima. It has a capacity of 201 MW, making it one of the largest in Colombia. Atlas Renewable Energy is an international renewable energy generation company with headquarters in Miami, Florida.

One data point that really stands out about this solar facility in Colombia — it can generate enough electricity each year to be ‘‘equivalent to the energy consumption of over 214,000 Colombian families.”

Hydropower generates most electricity in Colombia, with only a little solar power present. However, Colombia has had quite a bit of investment in solar power within the last year or so.

Ruben Borja, Country Manager at Atlas Renewable Energy in Colombia, answered some questions about the new solar project for CleanTechnica.

What is the capacity of the new solar power farm in MW?

Shangri-La has an installed capacity of 201 MWp.

How long did it take to construct it and how many jobs were created?

During its 18-month construction time, Shangri-La created more than 2,100 jobs, always prioritizing local labor.

How many women contributed to the construction and was the number unusual for such solar projects there?

The participation of women in the project’s construction reached 22%, which exceeded the targets set during the project’s development.

How much electricity will it generate per year and how many households will it provide electricity to?

It will generate 403.7 GWh of energy per year, enough to power over 214,000 Colombian homes.

How much carbon emission will it offset per year?

It is expected to offset nearly 161,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

Is it the largest solar power farm in Colombia?

It’s the second largest solar project in Colombia.
