I enjoyed Angela's Ashes very much also. I think he exaggerates the meanness of the Christian Brothers. I'm sure they were stern, but his description defies belief. I'm sure they were very poor as well, due to his father's alcoholism and his rather simple mother, but I think he may have exaggerated a little there as well. The short story by Stephen Crane titled Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which is about street life in the Bowery in 1890s New York, has a character which resembles Angela. They are different kind of people, but they both have the habit of rocking in their chairs before the stove, lamenting their lot, moaning audibly, and cursing their husbands. All the while ignoring her children, of course. It could be coincidental, it could be this was a common thing to do among the poor Irish wives, or it could be a slight case of literary thievery.
