Ascend? No way, my tail-wagging friend. Cisco, Bay, Shiva, Cascade, Fore, Newbridge, Microcom, Livingston, et al, all use Rockwell analog chipsets in their remote access devices. I don't think they would take too kindly to Rockwell going in direct competition with them.

I think Rockwell much prefers it's position of supplying internal hardware to OEMS, and staying out of the end-user markets. I could see them getting into a niche on the network internals side, but nothing that would actively compete with the majority of their chipset customers. It would almost certainly result in more OEMS adopting x2, since there would no longer be a (perceived) advantage in supporting Rockwell.
