Patriot Act to Sail Through Congress
POWERLINE BLOG
We noted here that the four Senate Republicans who joined with the Democrats to stall the renewal of the Patriot Act had struck a deal with the administration, whereby a few insignificant changes would be made in the Act in exchange for their support. That had the effect of isolating the Senate Democrats, who were deprived of the fig leaf of "bipartisan" opposition to the Act.

This morning, the Washington Times reports that House Republicans, led by Speaker Dennis Hastert, say they are fine with the changes and will support renewal of the Patriot Act as revised. No surprise there; what's funny is that Senate Democrats, including Harry Reid, now say they will support the Act's extension as well!

Just a few weeks ago, Reid bragged that the Democrats had "killed the Patriot Act." Now he's meekly giving in, without having dealt the Act so much as a flesh wound. Which tells you, notwithstanding the incessant anti-administration cheerleading in the press, where the American people stand on national security issues.
