found this on reddit interesting take on republicans

In the 60s, my dad's Republicans were the adults threatening black children during desegregation.

In the 70s, my dad's Republicans were the ones who created the war on drugs specifically to destabilize and incarcerate the leaders black community. This was the decade that anti-abortion was officially added to the party platform.

In the 80s, my dad's Republicans were the ones who had this to say about the AIDS epidemic: "The poor homosexuals. They have declared war on nature, and now nature is exacting an awful retribution."

In the 90s, my dad's Republicans were the ones who created the "party of family values" branding that focused on the nuclear family, demonizing homosexuality, demonizing welfare queens, and claiming the cultural threat of immigration. This was when the GOP truly began to harness the social/culture war issues for political gain, but make no mistake. The hatred of minorities has always been at the forefront.

As has the corruption and hostility to the truth. My dad's Republicans resigned in disgrace to avoid impeachment. They got caught selling weapons to illegally fund rebel groups in direct violation of Congress. They were the ones who got caught destroying evidence of those things. They were the ones who got caught awarding government contracts to donors. They were the ones who cited executive privilege to avoid adhering to Congressional investigative efforts (Justice Gorsuch's mom was held in contempt of Congress for doing that while she was head of the EPA). Sound familiar?

Trump is more brazen about the grift than his predecessors, but the core of MAGA is what Republicans have been since my dad was a kid in the 50s/60s. We had a nice couple decades where most their views were socially unacceptable and they had to rely on dog whistles. But that's about the only difference.
