LG Telecom, KTF share 400 base stations

LG Telecom, the country's smallest mobile carrier, said yesterday it would share 400 base stations operated by KTF, a roaming pact aimed at expanding LG's voice and data coverage.

Top executives of LG Telecom and KTF, the country's second largest mobile carrier, will sign the agreement for the base station roaming, today.

LG Telecom subscribers will be given better services in areas where the mobile service provider formerly did not operate base stations.

The company said the deal saves at least 120 billion won on facility investment, while KTF gets 100 won per call in additional fees for the roaming service from LGT.

The roaming deal came after the government and industry experts called for mobile carriers to share base stations and other wireless networking facilities to minimize overlapping investments

Telecom Firms Agree to Share

Octorber 15, 2001

LG TeleCom Co. said Sunday it had agreed to use about 400 base stations
of KT Freetel Co. in regions where LG has no base stations. The chief
executives of the two wireless service providers plan to exchange letters of
agreement Monday.

According to the agreement, LG will pay 100 won (7.7 cents) per call using
the base station.

The two mobile service providers said that they had negotiated for the deal
for more than a year, in order to reduce LG Telecom's spending on
construction of new base stations and to add to KT Freetel's profit.
