A teroublesome passage, IMO, from,

wcmh.com

<<<...3Com's influence will likely loosen USR's obstinate lone-wolf stance in the 56Kbps debate.

"We think 3Com's membership in the Open 56Kbps Forum could be instrumental in bringing about a standard more quickly," said Charlie Hartley, a spokesman for Lucent in Basking Ridge, N.J>....>>>

I feel this is the crux of the x2 exploitation argument. Much is to be gained by USR's lone-wolf stance. That 3Com intends to weaken that stance and facilitate a standard will surely diminish USR's x2 monopolistic advantage. 3Com should back x2, period.

On the other hand, Eric B. may be playing the "diplomatic" role, one of reigning in the lone-wolf in exchange for the Flex-coalition's taming down their FUD on x2. This may be a pretty good strategy because the current battle is hurting 56 Kbps' marketability. And there has been less x2-FUD since the COMS/USRX announcement, -- anybody notice?
