I don't recall ever having such trouble with fsck. Apparently you have, but without some context it's hard to comment. A big enough disk on a slow enough machine could talk half an hour, I suppose, but normally it's a pretty quick process requiring minimal intervention, in my experience. An obvious solution might be a UPS.
