I disagree with your statement about the relevancy about me focusing on their avti virus business. Their president, Gordon Eubanks, stated a few weeks ago that their best producing, fasting growing product segment is anti virus. It was 25% of their business this past qtr, up from 20% the prior qtr. When you consider that their overall year over year numbers were flat, that makes their anti virus business very important to them. They have stated that they are going to revamp their pricing strategy for their anti virus products in order the compete more effectively against McAfee, who has been stealing marketshare away from them at an increasing rate. They are supposed to make a formal announcement on this next week.

Unfortunately for Symantec, if they try to get into a pricing war with McAfee, they are going get their asses handed to them. McAfee's profit margins are about double what Symantec's are, hence they can discount a lot further than Symantec can and still make money.

I am still puzzled by their decision to slash prices on their strongest growth product area. I guess that they plan to make it up on volume, which I don't think can be done.
