Interesting Broadband bits from Jesse berst's Anchor Desk

BROADBAND GETS BIG BOOST
Competition for your fast-access future is heating
up. AT&T, US West and Motorola all announced
initiatives to step up deployment in the U.S. The
battle continues to be between cable modems and
Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL), a way to let ordinary
phone lines carry high bandwidth.

Cable modem. Telecommunications giant
Motorola purchased General Instrument, which
holds 90% of the world market in digital cable
boxes. Click for more.

DSL. AP reports US West will try to lure new
high-speed Net subscribers by expanding its
discount DSL service. Its DSL-lite features fast
speed for less money, but requires a dial-up
connection.

All of the above. Hedging its bets, AT&T will make
its cable Internet service available during the first
half of next year, and will expand its DSL service
into 100 new markets by the end of next year. Click
for more.
