More: Palm 2MB Upgrades For Older Pre-Palm III Pilots
Newsbytes - June 02, 1998 14:43

SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A., 1998 JUN 2 (NB) --
3Com's [NASDAQ:COMS] Palm Computing is shipping an upgrade for the
firm's older devices to give them the same power and features as the
more recently released Palm III. Named the Palm 2MB, the upgrade
add-on board has an extra megabyte (MB) of flash memory for data and
application transfer, more storage capacity, version 3.0 of the Palm
OS (operating system) and built-in infrared (IR) wireless connectivity.

A Palm Computing spokesperson told Newsbytes the upgrade does not add
backlighting to older systems, but other than that "and the way the
outside looks," PalmPilot Personal and Professional series and the
original Pilots 1000 and 5000 units, will have the same capabilities
as the Palm III.

He said the upgrade circuit board's additional megabyte of memory will
bring older Palm Pilots up to 2MB memory, and was needed to run Palm
OS 3.0 software. The package also includes Palm Computing's extended
MacMillan software packet, which is included with the Palm III but
until now could not be used on an original Palm Pilot.

The spokesperson said the board is "as easy to install as putting
batteries in. Remove the cover on the back, plug in the board, and
you're ready to go."

The upgrade kit also has an installation guide and application
handbook for the Palm III organizer, a basic handbook for the Palm III
organizer, and the Palm's Desktop organizer software on CD-ROM. In
addition, Pilot 1000 and Pilot 5000 users will receive Palm Mail and
expense tracking applications, while PalmPilot Personal users will
receive Palm Mail.

The 2MB upgrade card is available immediately for a suggested retail
price of $129, the firm said.
