It is a Leonid meteor shower from the comet is Temple-Tuttle. It is called a Leonid shower because it appears they fall from the constellation Leo.

Actually, the debris field is the wale of the Temple-Tuttle, which is nearing the sun, earth passing through its stream. Last time it was here like this was in the 60s when we had fewer objects orbiting earth. You're right, Jon, there is real concern that earth's satellites could be impacted.
