I recall reading somewhere that the entire 9-11 operation cost Al Queda something on the order of $300,000. Is my recollection correct?

You're talking about the support money once here in America. I'm talking about the entire budget for the operation and it's support. Regardless compared to the damage done, were both in the same order of magnitude.

Taking 3,000 American lives was likely just a subsidiary benefit in his mind.

Exactamundo. He did try to decapitate the government...attacks on the Pentagon, White House and the Wall street. But the real purpose was to inflict a heavy dollar cost to the economy. I'd say he struck a bullseye on that account.

Interesting that Bush was in Florida on the day of the attack. Supposedly the plane that hit the field was on route to the WhiteHouse. It would have been a simple matter to check the President's schedule and change the day of the attack...but it seems that the day must have been selected weeks in advance. Seems to me that in the future the schedule of the President should be kept pretty close to the vest.
