James, Gus and all,
Digging into the new 10-K of Read-Rite,found the following info is interesting. Talking about MR head, RDRT states,
"The company's products for these programs support areal densities of approximately 1.3 GB per 3.5" disk; the company is also providing samples of its MR head designs at APPROXIMATELY 1.7 GB capacity per 3.5" disk to certain of its customers"
As a matter of fact, RDRT's three largest consumers are WDC (43%) QNTM (29%) Maxtor (12%), So my conclusion is Maxtor has probably been testing MR with KM during 1996 already. Ratio 1.7 GB to 1.3 GB is around 130% as you may notice.

The advantage is obvious to use KM with MR.

4 platter X 1.3 GB = 5.2 GB per drive
3 KM platter X 1.7 GB = 5.1 GB per drive

so the same volume, save 2 expensive MR heads (costs approximately $25 to 30 ) and 1 ordinary platter ( the money which can be used to plating the platter with KM).

Go AXC.
