Phantom "Break"
John Podhoretz says the we are supporting the Israeli position.

It appears Rice has decided that the purpose of the continued U.S. presence within the Quartet is to give Israel some breathing room and keep Israel from coming under undue pressure from Europe.

There's no other way to explain the sentence in the Quartet's Jan. 30 statement declaring it would be "inevitable that future assistance to any new government would be reviewed by donors against that government's commitment to the principles of nonviolence, recognition of Israel and acceptance of previous agreements and obligations."

You know the Europeans and Russians didn't want those words in there, but there they are. And, in accordance with those words, Israel "reviewed" its options, and, inevitably, decided not to be one of Hamas' "donors."

Some would say that the $50 million a month isn't a donation but rather that it rightfully belongs to the Palestinians.

To which the appropriate hard-nosed answer is: Too bad. You vote Jew-killing terrorists into office, you don't get your tax money until they stop being Jew-killing terrorists. It'll go into escrow and collect interest until Hamas comes to its senses or you come to your senses.

So don't listen to unnamed diplomats or to The New York Times. The United States is not standing in opposition to Israel's decision. And as for the Quartet — it's done about as well in shaping the Israel-Palestinian debate these past four years as Bode Miller has done on the slopes in the past week"
