The strange thing is, if you ever have a chance to go back to the country of your parents or your ancestors, you'll find out, not how Chinese or Korean, or Indian you are, you'll find out how American you are. You'll find out how many American assumptions you have and it will give you a sense of perspective and humor about the whole idea that identity is what you create. It's not foisted upon you. You are presented with circumstances in life and those circumstances change very rapidly.

Amazing, that's exactly how I felt when I went to Europe the first time [I have a European background]. However, I think if I went to China or Korea, I would not feel more American but rather more like an outsider because everyone else would have different physical characteristics from me.

A. Tan really has some incredible insights into people. When I saw JLC, I was going thru some bad times and was by myself in Old Pasadena. I wanted to see a movie and that was the only one ready to start. At first, I thought I wouldn't like it but because I was going thru a period of great self doubt, it turned out to be very powerful for me. In fact, my sister is going thru bad times now and I told her to rent it.

Has A. Tan written anything more since JLC?
