Mr. J Krnjeu,
I think the MSFT executives have what they call their "internal numbers" which are not released to the public. These guys just try to downplay how successful they are going to be---I just stopped believing their conservative numbers. Office2000 and Windows2000 numbers that we get from the company and which a lot of analysts will accept as reasonable---are going to be very consertative. Remember Windows98--I heard some analyst (believe it was Dataquest) that Win98 was not going to be that successfull. I just laughed and thought -these guys don't have a clue.

In my opinion, the public fell in love with Microsoft and chose their products over the competition. In addition, MSFT developed great software like Office. Those two factors (admiration of the company and great software) made them a huge success. In the late eighties when I was in university the majority of students used WordPerfect and Lotus123. Word and Excel were considered "imitations" of the real thing. I am just amazed how they were able to wipe out those products so fast. It was not Windows that helped them there as some people allege. Their software was improved very quickly. In the same way, I find IE is just much better than Navigator.

MSFT did really blow it in dealing with the DOJ case. They did not realize that part of the reason their products do so well is that consumers just loved them. It was the most admired company in Asia in a poll before the lawsuit (don't remember when survey was out). I believe it was number 1 or 2 in the US. Now I read it is number 3.
My point is that their competitive tactics which are being scrutined by the DOJ were not necessary. MSFT would have succeeded without these.
