Re Mexicans, I read something just today about the proportion of illegal immigrants who are Mexican. I don't remember the figure but it was pretty close to all of them. So I think that explains the emphasis on Mexicans.

Is it the size of the population, so that they can form their own society within the rest of society

I'm sure size has something to do with it. At a certain critical mass, immigrants, illegal or legal, will not be absorbed into the stew regardless of their willingness. It's like the Cuban takeover of Miami. Cubans have settled in other places in largish numbers but never reached that critical mass. IMO we would be better off with more diversity in our immigration. I'm sure that Sudanese can do landscaping and clean houses if that's what we need. It's fine to have a Cuban enclave in Miami, a French one in Louisiana, a German one in Pennsylvania, a Mexican one in Texas, etc. All that adds to the color and texture. When one enclave consumes the nation, though,...

they don't assimilate because they plan on going back home

I think the biggest problem with assimilation is that it's a lot of work and, with such large numbers, they don't have to so many don't. I imagine that going back home is a factor, too, but a lesser one. My grandparents had no plans to go back home. It was as much a one-way trip as going to the moon. It's different when home is right next door. And when you're expanding to land that is "rightfully yours" in the first place.
