Actually, I heard something that really throws cold water on the "'brave and wily Microsoft' vs.
'stupid dolts at IBM'" legend:

During OS/2 cooperative development: Gates and Ballmer, tried to sell half of Microsoft to IBM
because they feared that IBM would otherwise destroy them. IBM refused to buy. Gates/Ballmer
wondered why IBM wouldn't want an equity stake in their largest software partner....they took it
to mean that it must mean that IBM didn't intend for Microsoft to be their partner for long--that
IBM had already decided to eliminate Microsoft. So that's when Microsoft killed the OS/2 project
partnership and went whole-hog after Windows--effectively declaring war on IBM.
