You didnt specify where that second code snippet came from, so I'm not sure how to respond to it. According to the Sun documentation on the Date class, "Years are specified as the number of years since 1900". The Date class is also Y2K compliant.

I now recall that a few months back I questioned this too. At first it appears that the Date class is holding a two digit year, but it isn't. The Date class is Y2K compliant. My own testing has verified this.
