<<Glen: Did you see todays G&M. NT has many pages of write up. The future of Optics and IP was also discussed.

The Optic world will in 24 mths be in deep trouble. To start off they have a speed constraint. So the only thing available to play around is bandwidth and transmission. Plenty of Bandwidth is currently available. The line width can be reduced to 0.1nm quite easily. Now NT has disturbed the transmission end. This bound has been extended to 2000 kms. Hence a lot of the suppliers for amplifiers, intensifiers, Pumps, Filters and Fibre will be facing excess capacity. The only market that will boom are the Optical cross connects and Mux/Demux eqpt together with the Electro-Optic switch manufacturers at the Edge.

It is most likely that with an oversupply, Fibre will move into the Copper domain and make an attempt at replacing Copper with Fibre on very dense Copper Last miles.

How will NN fare in this new development.?>>

Good morning Doug,
From what I understand the 36170/450 will use OC-192 (much of the OC 192 will be supplied by Extreme Packet Device a NN affiliate and one hell of a company...a HUGE pipe). The 450 will be the only ATM switch that can come close to handling optical speed. LU/ASND should be releasing their version of the 50 rather than NN 450 3-6 months after NN has the 450 in trials. Bottom line NN should have their switches in every major telco by the end of next year.

All the above is jmo and to be taken as such.

Regards
Glenn
