Ramanujan was extraordinary, no doubt about it. But he isn't a very important figure in the history of mathematics, certainly not of the stature of the giants, like Euler and Gauss. Now if he'd been born into a well-off family in Europe with all the advantages (e.g. an education) who knows what he might have done.
