Now that the issues of recombination in flu and WSN/33 in Korean swine have been discussed in news in Nature, Science, and Wired News (so far), it may be time to review the "contamination" issue as well as the concept of recombination in negative ss RNA viruses such as influenza.

WHO and St Jude have taken a tough stand in Science, but the feuding labs (in Korea and Memphis) have just published a paper together in Virology showing recombination in the same PB2 gene (avian / avian - no WSN/33 involved) and the question about what is hiding in the missing sequences is alive and well
