I never looked at aesthetic enjoyment as an obstacle to overcome myself. ;<) While many would never admit it, the examples for the future are the educated classes in multilingual regions like Europe (typical student knows home language, English and another neighboring country language), Latin America (Spanish and English), Africa (French and/or English and the local language) and so on. America loses out by only knowing the common tongue and missing the cultural entree you get with multilingualism.
