RESEARCH ALERT - N.Y. bank merger pace seen rising

NEW YORK, April 3 (Reuters) - Analyst Frank Barkocy said Friday that investors
wishing to speculate on further merger
activity in the New York metropolitan area banking market could focus on nine potential
takeover candidates.

Barkocy said the agreement for Astoria Financial Corp (ASFC - news) to buy Long
Island Bancorp Inc (LISB - news)
announced earlier Friday could be the catalyst for additional consolidation among New
York thrift institutions.

The analyst's nine potential takeover candidates are Carver Bancorp Inc (CNY -
news), Dime Bancorp Inc (DME - news),
Dime Community Bancorp Inc (DIME - news), Flushing Financial Corp (FFIC - news),
Haven Bancorp Inc (HAVN - news),
JSB Financial Inc (JSB - news), Queens County Bancorp inc (QCSB - news), Reliance
Bancorp Inc (RELY - news) and
Roslyn Bancorp Inc (RSLN - news).
