TyCom in BPL-led combine bidding for India's VSNL
NEW DELHI, April 10 (Reuters) - A consortium comprising two Indian firms, BPL Com and Sterling Ltd, and two U.S. firms, TyCom Ltd (NYSE:TCM - news) and Century Tel, have bid for state-run telecoms giant Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd, a BPL official said on Tuesday.

``Our consortium includes BPL Com, a holding company, Sterling Ltd, TyCom and Century Tel,'' the official, who did not want to be identified, told Reuters.

BPL Com is part of consumer electronic maker BPL Ltd while Sterling Ltd is a Madras-based firm.

BPL was widely expected to team up with France Telecom to bid for the New York Stock Exchange listed VSNL (NYSE:VSL - news) in which the government is selling 25 percent of its nearly 53 percent stake.

The sale is the biggest ever being undertaken by the government in its decade-old privatisation drive. Tuesday was the last date for interested firms to put in their bids.
