We were Giant fans living in NYC back in the 50's, and I would probably have to go without dinner if I ever said something nice about the "bums". It was an incredible rivalry that has never been equaled in sports since. It affected peoples jobs, their marriages, who they accepted as friends, and who their children were allowed to play with. In those days not everybody had TV's, so it was pretty commonplace to pack into a neighborhood bar to watch the game of the week. When the 2 local teams played each other, one who came to cheer on his team R E A L L Y had to make sure he was sitting in the right establishment. Street fights were commonplace between innings, but they only lasted til the game came back on.....when the combatants would run back into their respective bars to next "at bat".
