HELSINKI, March 19 (Reuter) - Finnish telecoms group Nokia
Oy said on Wednesday that it and Intel of the U.S. had announced
the availability of new Narrowband Sockets Technology (NBS) at
the CeBIT fair in Hanover.
"Narrowband Sockets enable software developers to create
wireless messaging applications for mobile PC (personal
computer) and SmartPhone users," Nokia said in a statement.
The new specification was developed for Micosoft's
NT and Windows platforms, Nokia said.
"Intel and Nokia are offering royalty free licences to the
Narrowband Sockets specification and implementation," Nokia
said.
"The current NBS implementation, developed by Intel and
Nokia, provides NBS functionality for GSM (global system for
mobile communications) networks, the most deployed digital
wireless technology wordwide," Nokia said.
"Applications using NBS can automatically deliver your
e-mail, calendar updates, and personalised news to your mobile
PC, wherever you are," Intel's director of mobile communications
Jim Valerio said in the statement.
