He is not a charmer. Edwards cleverly positioned himself as the nice-guy candidate, stressing hope and uplift, and Kerry was a close second in the charm category. Likeability paid off for both of them. Loser: Organization. Once upon a time, organization was the sine qua non of winning the caucus. No more. Dean had what David Yepsen of the Des Moines Register called the best organization ever in the presidential caucuses. Gephardt said his organization was better than the one he built in 1988, when he won the Democratic caucuses. Didn't matter. Enthusiasm trumped organization.
