Pfeiffer created and perfected a model which drove 50% growth for CPQ for many years and took CPQ to undisputed #1 in the PC business. The Intel-based server was created and perfected by CPQ under Pfeiffer's watch - surely a sea change in the business, and one which drove huge profit for CPQ. CPQ had virtually the whole market for that product for nearly 5 years. During that time, the stock price went from a split-adjusted basis of about 1, up to 50.

CPQ was a better stock to hold than DELL from January of 1992 until January of 1997, when DELL finally topped CPQ in growth over the period. And DELL was the "stock of the decade".

Pfeiffer's problem was that when the business changed, partly as a result of DELL's direct model and great efficiency, he was too slow to adjust.

The same thing can happen in any business, and could happen to DELL.
