that pretty much sums up my beliefs too. I was a democrat when I was 17, but then I read Atlas Shrugged and I pretty much became a libertarian then. But one of the things that I found about libertarians is that they are politically impractical. The idealism doesn't allow libertarians to compromise enough to be a viable political party. And I think that is what will end up killing obama's efforts. Obama is an idealist (a sick and twisted control freak, but an idealist). He wants to change everything right now. Doesn't want to take baby steps.
I think that too many people believe that freedom means "perfect" or "enduring peace" or "never any economic downturn" or "no hunger" or "no disease", but it doesn't and it isn't meant to. Every facet of our lives is meant to be cyclical. We see this in nature from the seasons to the climate to the populations of plants and animals.
If we stick to solving our own problems, things come around. But when we try to solve problems that are not ours, we screw things up. We may see a temporary reprieve, but then the amplitude of the cycle is increased and it makes whatever problem worse. We see that whether it is in the economy or messing with forest management (think zero forest fire tolerance) to animal populations. Even though we may have the best of intentions, it's just aren't meant to take shortcuts.
Hardship is part of the equation. If we never have hardship we never learn, we never grow, we never evolve....quite simply, we aren't meant to always have 75 degrees out with sunny days. We need winter and rainy days. We need the dry winds that fan the brush fires that renew the land.
Government intervention into our lives is an attempt to interrupt natural cycles. And nature has a way of messing right back with us. We can't pretend that the rules don't apply to us.
long story short, I think we agree...LOL
