Hmmm, if your building 3-tier systems (client/server/server) you should be flexible enough in the design to take advantage of the CPU/storage in the middle tier. If it's done right it will improve client response time (middle tier cache/processing) and reduce load on the back-end. It also can improve uptime of the overall system if your application can function of the middle servers in case of back end problems.

Also completely off topic, here's my opinion on CORBA:
CORBA is a technology that you employ only when you require it since it is synchronous and has high overhead. Asynchronous message based systems such as Message Oriented Middlewares, provide a more robust solution for transaction type processing. That's why most real time financial solutions are built on top of MOM's.
