It's a nice history lesson except the author neglects to mention that even before the 20th Century, the United States Economy was the largest in the world. Before Britain had to finance fighting the First World War, the U.S. economy was probably larger than any two (maybe three) European economies - combined. Furthermore, the United States has always been a trading nation. John Kerry's ancestors (as in John FORBES Kerry) made their fortunes in foreign trade.
Also, the United States has used its Navy to protect American shipping since the USS Constitution was commissioned. So it's not exactly out of character, that the United States Navy would protect sea lanes from Iceland to American shores even while neutral.
