Hey - I used to live in Lompoc, CA (pronounced LOM-POKE), up until 1993, and my ex-father-in-law was an engineer for a private company on Vandenberg. Missile tests would occur in the middle of the night sometimes, and since we lived about 8 mi from the pads, our whole house would shake like it was an earthquake. If we ran outside rather than under a heavy table, the sight of the rocket was spectacular. Wish I was still there (not in Lompoc; too much fog - but somewhere in Santa Barbara County).
