Jim, I've just been running the CompUSA figures. 160+ stores with more opening all the time. Add in 100 Computer City stores, but toss out some that will be closed due to proximity to CompUSA. Say 250 stores. To move the 100,000 that Comp has preordered (we think), that's only 400 a store. Less than a hundred a month (Aug. 15-Dec. 31.) In fact, it is less than three a day. Sounds pretty doable considering heavy preorders and Christmas coming up. Plus a heavy ad campaign. Probably heavier than anything we've seen in years.
400,000 US sounds very possible, as does 650K overall. One million? Not sure about that, but they will LOVE THE iMAC in Japan and of course internet use is booming in Europe.
The CNN show was a letdown, but I liked the disclosure at the end that the show's graphics are done on Macs. Still, it will bring new buyers of AAPL into the market, starting tomorrow.
Got my copy of MacWorld today. MacWarehouse did a particularly nice job of showcasing games for the Mac in its iMac ad. I was also gratified to see a letter to the editor praising Apple's new OS 8 plus G3 models. This factor, combined with Office '98 led his company to buy new Macs for everyone instead of making their planned migration to Windows. This is likely repeating itself across the country. Apple finally has great products and a simple, focused plan.
