You may want to check out E-Trade. Commission of $19.95 regardless of the number of shares.

Can all be done via computer IF the price you want to buy or sell is in 16th's. Even then, some stocks won't accept 16ths. Then you have to telephone them.

Some stocks will accept 1/32nd increments. E-Trade has told me that in the future they thought we'd be able to enter decimal bids and offers.

Confirmations range from seconds to 15 minutes in my experience.
