The artificial stones are extremely nice; my daughter has an engagement ring with a very nice large diamond which would be totally outrageously expensive if it was natural. The most interesting thing is that DeBeers has a big factory in Portland Oregon growing artificial diamonds and they sell them into the market. While I originally thought it took a while for these things to be grown apparently they can be grown relatively quickly. DeBeers marketing of the natural diamonds is based on selling "natural" as an important phenomenon and they are very successful marketeers. In the end I don't think it will be either or, both will find a place in the marketplace and their own niche, but the natural mines that find the bigger diamonds will obviously do better while the lower grade mines will likely falter.
