Jiro(TM) Platform Specification
Released for Public Review; Storage Network
Manageability and Interoperability Moves Closer to
Becoming Reality

Live Jiro Platform Demo at SNIA Conference Illustrates Ease of Developing
Interoperable Storage Network Management Solutions Using Jiro
Technologies

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - news)
today announced the release of the Jiro(TM) platform core specification, now called the Federated
Management Architecture Specification, for public review. The specification sets forth a standard set
of Java(TM) Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for multivendor device and application
interoperability.

``The Jiro platform technologies are the first to provide an inherently network-centric approach to
dynamically managing heterogeneous storage networks,' said Denise Shiffman, director of content
services for Sun Network Storage. ``Management APIs being developed by industry partners,
industry consortiums and Sun will all comprise the complete Jiro platform management solution.'

The Federated Management Architecture Specification defines the FederatedBeans(TM)
component architecture. FederatedBeans components provide the distributed Java object
technology that is the basis of the Jiro platform. In addition, the specification also includes a set of
storage network resource and application management APIs. Standards for communication between
applications, services and devices at the object level across the network will enable customers to
easily manage complex distributed environments.

Jiro Platform Demonstration at SNIA Conference Illustrates

Platform-Independent and Highly Distributed Management for Heterogeneous

Networks

The Jiro platform expert group recently demonstrated the Jiro technologies for multivendor device
and application interoperability at Storage Networking World sponsored by the Storage Networking
Industry Association (SNIA) October 20-21 and earlier at the Jiro Platform Developer Forum
October 4-6. The demonstrations were a cooperative effort by eight Jiro platform expert group
companies to use Jiro platform technologies for distributed and automated management tasks.

The demonstration was built in less than one week, a testimony to the capability and ease of use of
the Java technology-based Jiro platform. By leveraging the power and flexibility of the Java
programming language, the Jiro platform ensures developers rapid development cycles and the
cost-effectiveness and flexibility provided by platform-independent technology.

Technologies to Enable Storage Management and Interoperability Near

Completion

The Federated Management Architecture Specification was created in an open review environment
under the Java Community Process (JCP). It is posted on the JCP Web site at
java.sun.com , where it will be available for a 30-day public review. At the end
of the public review, the Jiro expert group will take all comments under consideration and make
necessary changes before issuing the first release of the Federated Management Architecture
Specification, version 1.0. Expert group members expect the specification to be complete by end of
the calendar year.

Members of the Jiro expert group include Ancor Communications, Exabyte, Fujitsu Computer
Products of America, Hitachi Data Systems, Legato Systems, Quantum, StorageTek, Sun
Microsystems and VERITAS.

About the Jiro Platform

The Jiro platform is being developed through an industry-wide initiative launched in December,
1998. Its mission is to deliver a platform that enables true interoperability and
platform-independence for the management of storage, servers, applications and devices on
networks. The Jiro platform provides developers with an open environment for creating and
deploying storage management services and controlling, monitoring and configuring related data
services. For more information about the Jiro platform, please visit www.jiro.com.
