No question that the verification part could be automated but it would require a vast new data collection. I will be interested in what they do about requiring every American to submit a tax return so they have a complete set from which to do the verification.

Really pathetic when you think about it.

Outrageous amount of overhead. I suspect that they'll just give up on verification.

Although the government has a way of underestimating overhead. I got stuck with the long census form. The instructions said it would take 35 minutes. It took me more than 35 minutes each to answer some of the questions. For example, they wanted to know for the 12 months before the date of the census how much I earned in interest, dividends, etc. Of course, I had those numbers for CY 2009 but not for April 1 to March 31. Financial institutions are required to provide that info for the tax year so that folks can do their taxes. If the Census Bureau wants such info, it should at least warn the unlucky victims a year in advance so we can have the data available. Or they could use the last CY rather than the previous 12 months. Sheesh!
