I'm fascinated by the Mongols. I have a great old book that used to belong to my father, called The Mongol Empire: Its Rise and Legacy, by Michael Prawdin. I'm not sure if was there or somewhere else that I read that when the horde was moving through eastern Europe, people smelled the approaching army days before they saw them.
