Derek,,

>But for the next few years 56k modems will be the mainstay with xDSL and Cable fighting it out.<

You're exactly right Derek, and until there is a clearer picture of which access method will hit the right combination of availability, speed and price with consumers, this is where investors should put their money, IMO.

>I do agree with you about the condition the cable companis are in, and they are going to have a hard time building infrastructure with not a lot of money.<

Not to mention the cable companies are preoccupied $$$ wise with defending their primary revenue base.

>It confuses me the whole xDSL cable modem thing. Cable has the right price whereas the RBOC's have not commited to anything I would call affordable. I think over the next 6 months there will some shaking out and quite possibly we'll see some price breakthrough's on xDSL.<

That would be nice. Cable modem access would be nice. Satellite would be nice, and I may be investigating that further.

>But I do believe several years down the road satellite will become very wide spread.<

It seems to me that satellite access has a clear opening to make a strong push into the internet access market. If they could bring their dish prices down just a little more, to like $400, and then give unlimited down-stream broadcast for $40/mo, I would switch right now. I haven't really followed the latest deals for satellite internet, but if USR and some local ISP doesn't hurry up and offer 56K, I'm going to be looking at other alternatives. Internet access through the traditional ISP/telco this winter has been totally crappy - busies, dropped calls, half-drawn pages, little bits of the picture that take forever to finish down-loading (usually it's some advertisement)...my patience is running out, and I don't want to endure this level of service for the remainder of the year.

COMS up to $35 in after-hours trading...Nice...if it lasts 'till morning. -G-
