Re mongols: I saw a documentary that said one things that allowed them to decimate the cursaders who wore heavy armour was silk shirts. The mongols traveled light.

When an arrow pierced a silk shirt (it did not pierce the silk)so it could be pulled back out with a minimum damage to the flesh. And they were great horsmen, so they just sort of ran circles around the enemy wearing tons of heavy armour.
