The "new" workstations were introduced, I believe, the first of this year. My understanding is they were behind Sun (in the lower end workstations) until these new products came out The new products brought SGI more or less "even" with Sun. (depending on what you read). I would like to hear from some who has had to opportunity to use both products. There have been several comments about SGI margins being "squeezed" by lower cost Pentium Pros. This I believe is probably true. However Sun has the same problem and would be hurt more, (IMO) because they do not have over 50% of the computer market for over $100,000 computers as does SGI. Just my opinon, but Sun and SGI will always have the "jump" on Intel (big, big down side if they don't). I believe Intel "milks" each generation and would have no incentive to make a major advance in their market.

Go to Crays and SGI's home page. SGI has "Updated" their Web Page and show SGI/CRAY logo on the home page. SGI has a great Web Page (IMO). It would take you hours to read all the "neat stuff" on both Web Sites, not to mention all the links to customers using their products and associated second parties with "add-ons". I believe if you read the two pages you'll be impressed and will see how similar the two systems are on the high end.
