11% more money lands in Windsor casinos

As gaming interests and politicians sweat out details for casinos in Detroit, Windsor's two gambling joints are raking in an increasing amount of cash.

According to the Ontario Casino Corp.'s annual report that was released last week, the two temporary casinos grossed the equivalent of $441.6 million in U.S. dollars in fiscal year 1996-97 before expenses.

The total is up 11 percent from the previous fiscal year, which did not include a full 12 months of revenue from the Northern Belle riverboat. It opened in December 1995.

The two casinos have taken in the equivalent of $353 million so far in the 1997-98 fiscal year, which ends March 31. Aided by the weak Canadian dollar that attracts Americans, last month was their most profitable December, with revenue of $39 million. About 80 percent of the casinos' visitors came from the United States.

"It's our best year yet," said casinos spokesman Jim Mundy. "I think our marketing that we've put into place over the previous 12 months has begun to pay off."

Windsor's permanent casino is scheduled to open in June with 100,000 square feet of gambling space -- the same as each of the three planned Detroit casinos -- and a 23-story hotel containing 389 rooms.

Mundy said officials continue to study whether to keep one or both of the temporary casinos running after the permanent casino opens.

Detroit's casinos are not expected to open until 2000. Temporary casinos, if allowed, could open next year.

Ontario's four casinos took in $690 million in gambling revenue in 1996-97. The two other than Windsor's are in Niagara Falls and north of Toronto.

The province plans to scatter 20,000 video lottery terminals around Ontario by June and open 44 permanent charity mini-casinos. One mini-casino is planned for Windsor, and should be open by August.
