Agreed. The first wave of American troops that hit the beaches of Normandy were on a suicide mission.

An exaggeration at best. It was a very dangerous mission and a lot of them died but they where trying to live while carrying out there attacks, not die in the attempt. Also a number of them did live. Only on Omaha Beach did it even approach a suicide mission, but even there it wasn't quite suicide. Even units like the 116th Regiment of the 29th Division, which lead the attack at Omaha while sustaining over 90% casualties had survivors. And that casualty rate wasn't anticipated (so it wasn't suicide) but was caused by better soldiers defending that beach then the allies had expected combined with the fact that they had less armor support.
