White House Denies Shelving Budget Deficit Warning

story.news.yahoo.com

$44 trillion deficit projection! These numbers may be as credible as the ones that projected huge deficits by the end of the ninenties (which turned up to be surpluses), but the nineties were "once in a lifetime" bubble years, and the boomer retirement looms very real.

How is this relevant to politics? Well, this article appeared in the Financial Times. We very much depend upon the kindness of strangers nowadays to finance our gaping current account deficit. If they decide they had enough, before Dubya comes up for reelection, his prospects might dim appreciably.
