NSOL might just win by default. 10/03/98 - Domain Deadline Comes, Goes Oct. 02, 1998 (InternetWeek - CMP via COMTEX) -- Oct. 1 was supposed to be the long-awaited cutover-the day private industry took over domain name registration management. Fresh from a six-month extension, industry still hasn't agreed on who will run the domain name system or how Network Solutions Inc., the company that runs the .com, .org and .net registries, will let other registrars use its domain name database to register new names. The U.S. Department of Commerce gave Network Solutions a one-week extension of its formerly exclusive contract while industry scrambles to get its plan together.
