We were thinking about a "Golden Doodle" - mix of golden retriever and poodle. But the "breeders" of these dogs want up to and over $1,000 for one. Why am I going to pay that kind of money for what is essentially a mutt? I like both breeds, and see the potential for a very sweet dog, but it's not a breed and there is an enhanced risk of genetic problems from the cross-breeding.

The breeder we're getting the dog from has had the parents genetically tested, and the pups come with a health guarantee. That's about as good as it gets these days getting a dog.

My dad has an 18 month standard poodle. Very well mannered and well trained dog (probably because his wife trained it - all his other dogs have been ill-mannered meatballs). I was very impressed when I met the dog, and that is what tipped me in the direction of getting the standard poodle.
