Not just the human species, other animals do too, particularly apes. There is a very interesting book (all details about names escape me, as per usual) written by a South African anthropologist, a brilliant fellow, who spent his life out in remote wilds observing one of the baboon species. He was interested in their use of psychoactive plants, and in their potential for addiction. This was a topic of particular importance to him, since he was a junkie. Eventually he took his own life.
